The waters of Moreton Bay provide a safe haven for the migratory shorebirds that visit its Ramsar-Convention protected wetlands. The Walker Corporation’s Billion-dollar development plan for Toondah Harbour presents a major threat to the shorebirds that seek refuge here during their migration – such as the critically endangered Eastern Curlew, whose population levels have fallen by 80% in the last 30 years.
Promoted by both the Walker Corporation and the Redland City Council as a much needed boost for the local economy, and an aesthetic improvement to the area, the project has received overwhelmingly negative feedback from residents - yet the project continues on. In An Erosion of Faith, a lone Eastern Curlew can only stand and watch as his safe haven grows smaller, and humans encroach on the protected sanctuary of Moreton Bay. What hope do shorebirds have for the protection of their wetlands, when developer dollars are against them?
