Woman on a bed

This painting is another exploration into skin and flesh. Inspired by Lucien Freud, I thought about the weight of the body and the soft stomach and thighs. As well, I create with the perspective of a queer woman painting women, removing the male gaze from the equation.

Jemma Cakebread is a Melbourne based artist currently working with oil painting and textiles. She drew on everything from books to walls as a kid and kept it up to adulthood, eventually completing further education in the arts against careers advice at highschool. She listens to true crime podcasts while she paints, dislikes going to her own exhibition openings and takes terrible care of her paintbrushes.
