This painting began plein air, on Darkinjung and Guringai country overlooking the rocks of Mt Ettalong and Pearl Beach. My late mother, was always a big lover of angophora's and had a lot of her own paintings peering through twisting branches to bodies of water.
A wonderful joy for me was feeling my grandfather and mother with me on this painting trip. They're no longer here and I never met my grandfather, also an artist, so having the sense of them painting along with me in the scrub was an absolute treat.
There was a huge storm coming over the sea, so I had to pack it in and complete the painting in studio. The colours became a lot more golden yellow and ultramarine blue from there and details of the bush turned into patterned brushstrokes. This was a great joy to create and I hope it brings you joy to look at too.
