This piece depicts one of Noongar’s six seasons, autumn (djeran) and the importance of fire management. Many Aboriginal cultures practiced controlled burns, known as “firestick farming,” to manage the land. These burns helped to clear underbrush, encourage new growth, and reduce the risk of larger, uncontrolled wildfires. Stories often emphasize the wisdom and knowledge required to use fire responsibly and the deep understanding of the environment needed to maintain balance.
