This painting is loosely inspired by Edward Manet's "A Bar at the Folies-Bergรจre" completed in 1882 (which has so many different interesting interpretations!), where you have a woman standing behind a bar, staring at you, while a mirror behind her reflects a bustling crowd and a strange reflection. But it's also inspired by some of my own recent ponderings about the colour of words - or the palette of colours that a word tends to suggest to me.
I've always loved the word 'reverie' meaning "a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts; a daydream". To me this word is very colourful and warm, so I've tried to capture a sense of this in this work amidst the reality of everyday life with all of its commitments, interruptions, distractions and irritations.
P.S. I also tried to capture a sense of this word in a work I posted earlier called "Country Side Reverie".
This work is unframed, but will look great in a frame as well, which you can purchase through Bluethumb.
I've tried my best to provide clear and accurate photos of this work, but please note that colour nuances may not be captured perfectly by digital media and vary from screen to screen.
