Often referred to as the rose of the spring, ranunculus produce an abundance of lush, textural blooms throughout the second half of spring. Ranunculus is Latin for little frog, a name given by the Roman Pliny because of the wet conditions in which these plants are often found. The commonly grown turban buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus) is sometimes known as the Persian crowsfoot because of the shape of the "corms". I've painted them in a nasturtium vase by the Staffordshire born and bred designer Clarice Cliff who made her name with a brightly coloured range of Art Deco pottery that she designed in the 1920s.
