Artwork Description

Acrylic on stretched canvas, ready to hang.

Signed on the front.

Bass Strait is one of the most storm prone stretches of sea in the world. Huge seas can arise out of nowhere, sudden shallows, treacherous cross-currents and its proximity to the "roaring forties" all contribute to its dangerous nature. This triptych is one of series I have done trying to evoke the feel of this body of water.

The picture is of a large, growing thundercloud against a dark sky. I the foreground is rolling, hilly country with a prominent hill in the foreground. The picture shows a dark green undulating sea. The tops of the waves are illuminated by the yellow light of the just risen sun. But the lower parts of the waves are still in shade and are dark blue-green fading to black. The painting depicts a lowering sky over a barren plain.
