Artwork Description

An abstracted landscape where the viewer can impose thier own imagination and mood to create the world this work depicts. Contrasted minimalist colour fields applied with a large palette knife and smoothed with a brush to evoke movement and demonstrates my love for immediacy in an artworks creation.

The repeating motif of seascapes, horizons and skyscapes incorporating two distinct colour field regions are a direct link to my Navy service experiences.

The work can represent an imagined alien landscape - but it is more that a landscape, the work is intended primarily as a colour field abstraction. Sometimes there's something more that can be revealed with careful viewing and a vivid imagination. This work represents a minimalist abstract landscape that implies an aerial view of a harbour or lake, or equally a cavern cutting horizontally through a limestone rock strata.

My aim when creating these minimalist imagined landscapes and colour field combinations is to illicit emotional responses, memories and feelings. My work suggests incompleteness so the viewer can fill in the space with their own subconscious and contemplate the idea of mortality, decay and the inevitable march of time.

This is a work on paper and requires matte backing and framing to hang.

Artist Bio

Jonathon Telcher (b.1972) Australian abstract painter.

His love of art history and ongoing technical education influences his creative practice. There are repeating motifs of seascape, horizon, sky and decaying surface which are a direct link to his Navy service experiences. Jonathon's art is executed primarily as minimalist colour field abstractions that embody a sense of calm and serenity, with flat smooth surfaces. The purpose of his art is to imply minimalist colour fields with hinted elements of landscape that suggest incompleteness so the viewer can transform the work with their own thoughts. Although the work shouldn't be considered solely based on its resemblance to landscape as the element of colour field is equally strong. The work is often dark and brooding, with the colour field elements rarely uniform.

Jon's imagery includes clearly defined horizons, deep dark grounds and expansive area's implying skies that incorporate an industrial decay representing the degradation of the human condition and fall of civilisation.

The work can be described as a broadly minimalist, but differing from pure minimalism as the work occasionally contains allusions to images, places and objects. His process is quite simple, without pre-planning he lays down abstracted shapes with a knife, blending and feathering the surface smooth with a brush, removing layers with pure determination and repeating the process with a limited colour palette until a satisfactory image emerges. There is a fusion of automatism and volition in his works which is pursued to enhance the abstracted nature of his practice - there is no such thing as accident or mistake, it all comes from the subconscious - it could be considered 'process art'.

Jonathon hopes that his works convey meaning through the imagery that develops organically and techniques used. He works with smaller pieces on paper that can be framed using ready-made frame and matte products found in craft and homewares stores for an inexpensive, yet elegant-looking framing solution or matte backed and framed by a traditional framer.
