Artwork Description

Minimalist colour field abstraction.

This dark, foreboding work represents an imagined surface glimpsed behind memory and emotion. Sometimes there's more that can be revealed with careful viewing and a vivid imagination, a mood of decaying industrialisation.

NOT READY TO HANG - This is a work on A1 300gsm art paper and requires matting and backing to frame and hang.

Artist Bio

Jonathon Telcher (b.1972) Australian abstract painter.

Jon is interested in surface, paint texture, the interaction of muted colour and finding illusion in his minimalist technique and is continually searching for a pictorial style to evoke meaning . He applies paint with knife, scraper and brush, but is intent on eliminating the tell tale marks of application by removing brush marks, feathering and blending areas to create flat matte surfaces. He uses water on drying paint, softening the surface for excavation to expose underlying layers. The resulting drips and watermarks are intrinsic to the works development and point to the dynamic act of creation through destruction.

His dark minimalist compositions are meant to produce a sense of calm to produce space for the viewer to think about what the work means to them. Paintings are generally oriented vertically to create something that connects to Jon's past and the potential future as if searching from a window in the minds eye.

The work is intentionally contradictory, illusion within a minimalist framework and the goal of flat surfaces that are quite layered and textured.

The purpose is to elicit feeling, emotion and memory within himself and the audience for his work.
