These self-portraits were heavily inspired by Cubism. Cubism was a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented in around 1907β08 by artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They brought different views of subjects (usually objects or figures) together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and abstracted. Cubism is a style of art that stresses abstract structure at the expense of other pictorial elements especially by displaying several aspects of the same object simultaneously and by fragmenting the form of depicted objects.
These self-portraits were made using acrylic paint on battleship lino block 50x40cm and were all sold to Junction Motel and Lounge Bar.
The addition of sharp geometric shapes help to distort the human face. The bold colour palette represents the artist's personality which is bubbly and vibrant. The artist has used battleship lino block to paint on, as the surface is smooth making the application of paint effortless.
