When I went to the MoMA exhibition in Melbourne this year, I came across the monochrome painting Number 107 by American painter Ad Reinhardt. I have always been drawn to abstract and minimalist art works and when I read his quote about abstract art, it struck a cord with me and my relationship with abstract painting.
"Abstract painting is not just another school or movement or style, but the first truly unmannered and untrammeled and unentangled, styleless, universal painting."
In 'unmannered', I have integrated the monochrome white background with the word and my freehand, abstract charcoal circle. So far there are three in this series...they would look great all hanging together in a modern space.
