As the first cockatoo to be illustrated by Joseph Banks draftsman Sydney Parkinson, perhaps the red tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) best encompasses our complicated relationship with Australia’s unique native bird life and their distinct role in shaping the identity of Australian landscapes. This brave lady lives on Darug land in Sydney, I was enamored by her assemblage of feathers and captured a moment she morphed into something reminiscent of the night sky, as she chatted and preened. Depicted on a vacant background, her isolation not only brings her into focus but is a gentle reminder of potential looming displacement
