Lizzo’s message is all about female empowerment. The lyrics of her songs send a clear statement of unapologetic, body-positive, femme identity. At 31, she is killing it as a curvaceous, plus size black singer and flautist in a world of predominantly skinny white pop idols.With this piece, I saw Lizzo as Venus being birthed from a Venus Fly Trap, but the colour with her skin went better with the white magnolia. She is surrounded by petals containing lyrics from some of her songs. The stamen from the flower are hands and legs from fashion magazines that speak to the notions of beauty in western culture. Lizzo uses them as her throne, pushing them aside to show authentic beauty. I printed photos taken from my garden and trips to Bali, as well as eyeballs and butterflies floating around her, to add to the surrealist quality.
