Reclaiming the vessel is a series of artworks embedded in the concepts of eco-feminism. Under patriarchal societies, women have been exploited similarly to animals and our natural environment. Our history of valuing women for their reproductive capacity and exerting control and ownership of womens' bodies still seeps its way into the modern experience of pregnancy and childbirth. It was a defining feature in my experience of pregnancy and I sought to overcome it at every turn. Then childbirth took me to that raw, deep human place that many mothers describe. That's the place where I realised the only thing wrong with viewing women and nature as equal is that it has been a disadvantage, and the source of our oppression. I argue that Anthropocentrism, the belief that human beings are superior beings, is a function of patriarchy that needs to be dismantled. Healing our environment, and shifting our values towards production and the use of natural resources, I believe, has the potential to heal deep rooted issues of gender inequality.
