Drifting II by Marijke Lambregtse is the second (first one sold) powerful, thick layered artwork I made on the subject of Lembongan Island. I do love these paintings a lot especially because of the layering and collage of old stamps, letters and parts of this poem ‘Seaweed’ by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I used in these works. The cultivation of seaweed on Lembongan island is still very strong and a great source of income for the local population especially when things like COVID happen and there are no tourists so at least they can go back to what original their way of living was which is great. I loved the little boats and the coral (of which sadly is not much left), hence the beautiful orange pigment I used and sea animals we saw and especially the spectacular sunsets, so incredible. So this painting is all influenced by that besides my concerns about my carbon footprint which I try to keep as low as possible. As usual in my latest works there is the little guardian you can find in the work who’s been protecting me while living in Bali.
