Artwork Description

Mixed Media on wood, ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

We decided on another overseas trip just a bit closer to home this time, Bali!
Staying in a little village in the countryside far from tourism is great a little isolated but peaceful and authentic. Although my head was still in Italy when we left, it’s only 8 months ago that we were there for half a year and I loved it so much but too expensive to go two years in a row so here we are and it looks like it will be good. Poring rain for the last two days so can’t go anywhere. Have started to paint on thick mixed media paper. The paint stays wet for a long time which is unusual for me coming from dry Brisbane and from Italy where we were in a drought and the paint dried before you even could put it on. Have to get used to that and also I can’t get my favorite colors here like magenta and even Payne’s grey, you have to make them up yourself
So rice fields, little tracks you can follow between the structured fields, patterns, colors are all of some sort inspiration. Not only that but also the heavy air we experiencing loaded with smoke from burning off the harvested plants, and luckily much less now burning the rubbish along the roads. Thank heavens for the rain which has washed away the dirty air…..The landscape really is magic with everything growing like crazy, you just stick a cutting in the fertile soil and it will take off in no time. Women still do most of the hard work here as elsewhere in Asia. Another interest of me for inspiration. I have another feeling about being here after we were her 11 years ago and things have changed but I think not in a good way. The rubbish is still there, the recycling doesn’t work, the burning is still going on and I feel for many Balinese they have no say and/or understanding of the climatic changes (temperatures are soaring) we all go through. They are of an incredible optimistic, friendly and happy nature and are convinced by having their many ceremonies the gods will look after them….the strong lines in this work are leading to the unreachable although magic is still possible.
