Floated down the Berkley River the other day in the beautiful Kimberley Region and painted and wrote this as soon as I got home.
“The wise and ancient monoliths, all striated, striped and painted with purples and ochre,
Stretch high above our little boat.
They stare silently down The Berkley,
Where old ones have passed before,
Leaving their dreams with the Mi Mi spirits.
The lazy old crocs bask in the warm grey mud,
Mouths open to catch a snatch of breeze.
And fingerspots and Barras impale themselves greedily onto our lines.
There’s not a fly to swat and not a sound to be heard as we drift under the wise and ancient Monolith.” Meg Lewer 2019.
