WEAVING STORIES

Your story is not the things that have happened TO you. Your story is how you have responded and been made by what has happened to you. Not one of us can choose the circumstances of our lives, and yet, it seems to be what we focus on. A glory list of pains and wrongs, of sufferings and loses.
But when you read a gripping book, it is not simply a recount of everything that has happened to the characters. It is not a list of events or complaints. The things that move us, teach us and change us are how the characters felt, how they grappled with their emotions, how they embraced pain and dark and joy, and how they choose to act in the face of adversity, and opportunity. And so it is with our us - we may feel fragile and not in control, but that is ok. We can still share what is being wrought in the depths of our hearts, how we are wrestling with our circumstances and choosing our steps.
These are the stories your children need to hear. Not of wishing things hadn't happened. But of the struggle, the refusal to give up, the daily sacrifices to live meaningfully. And that no one else can ever take away the choice to be brave, courageous, and creative.
