Artwork Description

Acrylic on stretched canvas, ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

This painting is about colour, not sentiment. Strong shape and movement parallel the inspiration from the Newcastle harbour river mouth, where ships enter and leave with bellies full of fossil fuels - coal, business as usual, averaging 4-5 shipping movements per day, will it ever stop, Ships navigate the sandy shores led by fluorescent navigation markers. The dark red, orange and black hulls of the ships charge the moment.

All art by Nicola Xavier

This work has a beachy feel, with the underlying background a pale to strong aqua with some scene of pinky red action. The scratchy horizontal lines give the overall feeling of an aged yet energetic patina. From top to bottom colours start with apple green, yellow green, marine blue, fuzzy white, apple lime green and red. Each colour has a different medium so the light that is thrown onto the canvas revealls stripes with different refective qualities which create another dimension of liveliness.A small painting, different shapes are positioned to cover the canvas. Contemporary leaf shapes, the circular floral represtations float upon a blushed pink background. There are some highlights of yellow and browny red.Splashes of muted apricot and pinks from the Azalea flowers, textural red and pink circular splotches, greens and pale blue sky with a hint of the pattern found on Alstroemeria petals, all come together to create a lively canvas. The centre of this painting is a a wild bunch of handpicked leaves and flowers from the garden. The background is pale pink and draped with the Alexander palm flower fronds, which are pale silver and pale browns. The centre is a deep green Monstera leaf, Queen Emma Lily stems which are a dark red, browny, purple, one is closed which adds a splendid form, the two other stems are open. The centre stems and leaves are surrounded by Hydrangea, Frangipani and Azalea. The vase is pale blue and the bottom of the painting is a bunched white cloth.
