Papilio Rising is based on Papilio ulysses or the Ulysses Butterfly, which is a beautiful blue and black butterfly that can be found in north eastern Queensland. Clay board is a panel that has a thin layer of kaolin clay coated on it. This artwork is achieved by putting acrylic inks on to the surface, allowing the colours to meld and dry over a few days. I have also used metallic inks so it does shimmer when the light hits it. The scientific illustration of the butterfly is then etched onto the board revealing the white clay below the inks using fine tools in many techniques including stippling.
It was professionally framed for an art prize but this frame was damaged at an exhibition. I am including this frame in for free as it may be able to be fixed.
