This painting portrays a German Luftwaffe Messerschmitt BF-109D attacking a British Vickers Wellington medium bomber during Allied bombing raids on German naval targets off the coast of Northern Germany in December 1939. Royal Air-Force Bomber Command staged a number of daylight raids on northern Germany between September and December 1939 but these attacks were ceased after heavy losses were suffered and the Wellington units switched to night attacks.
