I was studying suburbia at the time of its painting. I thought there was an irony about me walking around the streets of suburbia alone to look at the empty, quiet streets for comfort and inspiration.
A train station is usually busy and full of people and company, but on this grey day there was a quiet eeriness to it. It rang true to me of Australian artists who have painted suburbia to represent our mundane, repetitive lives or our loneliness, despite having people around and destinations to be at. The red pole represents the contrast in our lives and the surprises and positivity we can find along the way.
