HOMESTEAD OF MY DREAMS.
This painting "Kooreelah is Crumbling" is part of a major body of work exhibited at Stanthorpe Regional Gallery and Tweed Regional Gallery Downtown in 2020.
Kooreelah is situated between Stanthorpe and Kyogle. It's a tiny town. This building sits just out of that town, just in site from the main road. The poor thing is on it's last legs. The whole end wall and the back of the building has crumbled. The roof is caving in and one more good wind and I think it will all be gone.
Being able to capture the essence of a particular time and place. I guess in a way each of these works tells that same story. I now know each board, each rusty piece of tin with an intimacy that has indelibly etched these buildings into my heart. How it was when you were there. The melancholy stillness draws you to the abandoned, the forgotten and unloved. I think we like to imagine we hear the echos of the past and the people who worked and played in these now quiet buildings. And I cant help but wonder if the ghosts of those gone know that we stand where they once stood and honour their efforts and lives. It’s that universal need to leave our mark. Make a difference. Shout to the world I WAS HERE. I mattered.
Creating this exhibition was an exercise in precision. I wanted to paint these places exactly how they were at the time I saw them. The paintings give you a sense of place while the drypoint engravings give a more intimate look.
