Artwork Description

Horses are one of my favourite subjects to draw as they are such beautiful creatures. They are very difficult to get right but I enjoy the challenge. This piece is done on quality drawing paper, using a Derwent drawing pencil. I like the effect these pencils give when coupled with a fine drawing paper. My drawing technique, (and painting as well or that matter) is greatly influenced by the South Australian artist, Heysen. I am from South Australia originally, and when growing up spent a great deal of time playing among the hills of the Flinders Ranges that Heysen made famous through his paintings and drawings. I remember a camping trip to Wilpena Pound, when we took our horse, named Tumble, along in the float, so we could spend our days riding and camping along the gum-lined creek where we set up camp. Later, when I started painting, I went back for painting trips in the area. During the late 1980s I was feature artist in an exhibition of horse racing entitled 'The Sport of Kings', organised by the Elder Fine Art Galleries in Adelaide. Horses have always been one of my favourite subjects to paint and draw.
