Artwork Description

INSANE IN THE MONTAIGNE
Portrait of Australian singer and songwriter MONTAIGNE (aka Jess Cerro)

FINALIST - 2017 PORTIA GEACH MEMORIAL ART PRIZE

FEATURED - 2019 ADORN ME by POETSARTISTS, curated by CAROL HODES and featured in BEAUTIFUL BIZARRE MAGAZINE

I first heard Montaigne's voice, sounding like an exquisite fusion of Björk and Kate Bush, on the radio. From Triple J Unearthed High finalist in 2012 to ARIA Award winner in 2016 for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, singer-songwriter Montaigne (aka Jess Cerro) has worked with artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Megan Washington, San Cisco and Japanese Wallpaper.

To me, however, she evoked the New Romantics of the '80s: Adam and the Ants and Spandau Ballet, Boy George and Duran Duran, an era I’m utterly fascinated with.

Jess exudes an intriguing combination of sassy confidence and eccentricity, layered with sensitive vulnerability. An idiosyncratic creature, her music explores the emotional and deeply personal sides of her life, connecting with her audience through the sheer honesty and sincerity of her lyrics.

And when, on the day of our first sitting, she emerged in a decadent costume of frills, flounces and passementerie, I just knew I was going to have fun with this painting!

Artist Bio

Rosa Fedele is an Australian contemporary artist and author based in the beautiful Central Highlands, Victoria.

Unconstrained by conventional expectations, Rosa’s work is genre-defying, often veering into the world of whimsy, her style a blend of figurative, illustrative with a touch of absurdism.

Whimsical, playful and nostalgic, her DREAM MACHINES series is a vibrant and joyful collection of works celebrating vintage and classic cars and Italian scooters, often accompanied by darling doggos and romantic beauties from the silver screen.

“I’m passionate about preserving these wonderful old machines on canvas; reflections and sunshine flashing off seductively curvaceous chrome, the patina of old duco, bumpers wrapped lovingly around steel bodies, the layers of colour and texture and, of course, delicious red rust. I hope that my paintings will take you on a heart-warming and joyous ride in your favourite classic convertible, Italian silk scarf billowing in the breeze and faithful hound by your side.”

Rosa has been a finalist in numerous awards, including the Portia Geach Memorial Art Prize, Almenara Art Prize (Spain), Copes Portrait Prize and Kennedy Prize; her work has been exhibited in NSW Parliament House, Parliament House Canberra as well as galleries and exhibitions in Australia and worldwide, and hangs in the Delta Airways Business Lounge LAX.

Also a novelist, Rosa has published two illustrated suspense novels, both set in Sydney of the past. Sumptuously decadent and wickedly eccentric, she blurs the line between reality and truth, challenging the reader to suspend their disbelief and enjoy the melodrama.

Her debut novel THE RED DOOR interweaves a story with pictures to draw the reader into her own bewitching, and slightly dark-edged, world. The sequel to her modern gothic mystery is THE LEGACY OF BEAUREGARDE.
