Australia’s striking and unique wildflower the Hakea Laurina commonly known as Pincushion Hakea is endemic to the southern parts of Western Australia. Located in the southwest in Noongar country the Aboriginal name for the plant is Kodjet. The distinctive round pincushion-like flowers have a red, waxy centre and spiky yellow tips. Small birds can nest and feed in the spiky foliage protected from predators.
The charming and vibrant Blue-breasted Fairy-wren are endemic to the southern parts of Western Australia and the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The Blue-breasted Fairy-wren lives in dense vegetation in the understory and are rather shy.
I initially created this painting for my love and appreciation of Australia’s beautiful native wildflowers and wildlife but considering the current epidemic circumstances it became much, much more than that.
I have named this painting Pincushions of the Southwest.
