Bashful - Charcoal drawing

My cat doesn't like being photographed. Every time I focus the camera on her, she hides her face or looks away. This drawing of her is based on one rare occasion when the stars aligned and she looked up just as I went click.
I drew this with charcoal and acrylic paint pens on a cradled wood panel. This is my first time using charcoal on wood and the experience was very different to paper and canvas. I really liked the smoothness of the wood and how the charcoal glided on.
I have sealed the drawing with a satin varnish. It doesn't need to be framed behind glass unless you wish to do so. Alternatively, you can add a floating frame or just add wire to the back and hang it as is. I will leave it up to your discretion.

Hi, my name is Shalini and I am a Watercolour Artist.

Inspired by my Indian heritage, colour always takes centre stage in my paintings. I love to explore the interaction of colour with light, for instance, the colour blue in shadow holds a very different tone and feeling to the same blue when exposed to sunlight.

I’m proud of where I come from and excited to share what I continue to learn everyday. I have loved drawing and painting from a young age and as an adult that love continues to grow. Taking the time to understand, explore and create with curiosity and an open heart defines my creative process.

The delicate nature and transparency of Watercolours brings a certain glow to paintings that I haven’t experienced with any other medium. What began as a passion has evolved into something more and to follow this natural evolution, I completed my Undergraduate Certificate in Fine Art at Curtin University in 2025 to create paintings of my own and also teach others how to paint with this beautiful medium.
