Inspired by one of the amazing women in my life. I met the indomitable Miss Bates in an airport on the way to Harare 30 years ago. When we got there we jumped on to the back of a big orange truck and took off across Africa on the adventure of our lives. We stormed village markets in search of cheap treasures, stayed up all night playing mad drinking games on safari, watched a pink bellied hippo walk down the beach and into the ocean in Gabon and trooped across the Sahara Desert.

When we got back to Sydney years later she found her place and reigned supreme as the Queen of Newtown collecting a crazy troupe of musos, dreamers and vagabonds who would follow her from one end of town to the other. We would spend Friday nights swilling copius amounts of cheap beer and snogging questionable admirers – her resplendant in her dreadlocks, purple tie-dye and Doc Martens, me fresh in my corporate suit from my corporate job. I loved her so. And rarely see her now but think of her often – her courageous ninja spirit with all of her blackbelts. She lives at Manly and must surely be the Warrior at North Head.
