Sometimes I will see someone...in my consulting room, on a tram, serving me in a store....and I will notice that they have scars which I recognise to be the result of self-inflicted injury. Self harm is a common and poorly understood phenomenon. In this painting I wanted to acknowledge that the scars that people carry with them speak to their suffering but also to their resilience. They do not need to be hidden. I wish that no-one would feel the need to self harm...but also hope that those who do suffer this particular malaise will come in time to embrace their scars and to find strength in the story they tell
