When using vintage materials, I aim to respect what they used to be, but give them a contemporary life. Old photos from EBay are great inspiration. I look for shapes (such as the photo that helps make the sleeve) and humorous vignettes (the two men wearing tin pots on their heads whispering in her ear). It's not just the painting that makes this work interesting, it's all the individual stories that surround her. It's a bit sad that family photos are no longer wanted, but it's an opportunity for me to let them be a part of social history in this way. Please note the timber frame depth- it's a bit deeper than usual.
