I paint what interests me – which is a pretty diverse range of things. To date, I've mainly been a painter of abstract landscapes, and some figurative works; but more recently have branched out into producing some purely abstract works. I love colour, expressive brushwork and the interaction of painted edges. I also like the allusion of representation in my semi-abstracted pieces and try to make them evocative of a particular sense of place or of moods associated with specific colours.
My background is in architecture and graphic design, so my artworks are often imbued with an inherent design aspect, but I have been painting and drawing all my life. I'm particularly interested in colour combinations and semi-abstraction in landscapes – where there I try to convey a sense of place, rather than a literal representation. I particularly like a flash of contrasting colour somewhere, plus dynamic edges and layered effects.
