MyCorona is a modern abstract acrylic painting that references COVID-19.

This abstract acrylic painting on stretch canvas is my interpretation of the coronavirus becoming a pandemic and humanity’s reaction to its spread. The virus starts in the lower left corner (the daisy with the Chinese flag) and as it works its way up the canvas. The smiling daisies (representing people) become more menacing (paranoid and scared) as they work their way toward the top of the painting – following the worldwide timeline. The ‘cells’ at the top have skulls within to represent the death toll around the world. Some of the cells at the top have map outlines within to indicate the spread of the virus across the globe.
For this abstract Coronavirus painting I custom-built the timber frame, stretched the canvas over the frame then painted 2 coats of gesso acrylic binder undercoat. Once dry I worked out my pattern gridlines and then cut out a template for my ‘daisies’. I then had to trace around each flower with a graphite pencil and started the long process of painting and blending all the shapes.
I was Influenced by Takashi Murakami’s flower and skull artworks when designing my smiling daisies.
Abstraction: Is not considered an accurate representation of the world around us. Basically, it uses colour, forms and gestural mark-making to convey the artist’s interpretation or vision. Abstraction is used to convey a story or evoke a feeling. There are a myriad of different ways to approach abstraction in painting and I have developed a few distinct or unique styles.
Geometric shapes: this style is more about building patterns and colour combinations however I do like to work a theme into the artwork sometimes covertly. Because of my background in sign writing, I find the above two styles of abstraction to ‘fit’ with my identity, and I like to challenge myself with new concepts or approaches to my art.
