Artwork Description

Acrylic on canvas

Signed on the front.

TheTideIsHigh is an archival quality large abstract acrylic painting on heavy-duty canvas. This interesting tsunami painting was conceived because I felt compelled to bring awareness. Environmental disasters are becoming more frequent and more violent yet there is little change from world leaders to slow climate change.
This painting was conceived after drawing a few small black Gel Pen drawings. The majority of my gel pen drawings are very abstract. I try to let my mind wonder as I search for shapes, patterns, and intriguing marks that can add to my repertoire of unique ideas. Often I combine completely different themes together in one artwork trying to find my own identity as an artist. And that is exactly what happened with my Tsunami drawings. I started with a running figure in the Keith Haring style. I came across Haring’s work while I was completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts at COFA and my fascination of his work has stayed. So I had a running figure, what should he be running from? The devasting Tsunami that hit Indonesia and Thailand is etched into my psyche and it came to the surface. Working with many artistic influences I created a very compelling abstract painting with many interesting focal points.
Influences: Japanese woodblocks, Brett Whiteley and Keith Haring and Thai style landscape art.
