One in a series, the painting explores different shapes and patterns using a colourful pallet. Gouldian finches have been added as a focal point. The birds have been treated in a more realistic manner which makes an interesting contrast with the whimsical abstract background.
The Gouldian finch is native to Australia, however prior to the Australian Government's ban on the export of Australian fauna, the finches were exported worldwide.
Their number have now decreased dramatically due to habitat loss.
They live mostly within the top end of the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region. Their current estimated population is 2,500 or fewer.
On a deeper level the birds symblise solid reality, what can be seen, touched. A semi abstract, whimsical background represents the impermanence of all things, whether due to mankind's intervention or the natural process of evolution.
The painting is a tribute to these beautiful, brightly coloured and charming Australian birds
