Living close to the bay, I often come across Pelicans when I am out and about enjoying our bayside parks. Everyday they welcome visitors and residents disembarking from the ferry at Dunwich on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island).

My representation of 'Phoebe Pelican' isn't your typical realistic painting - she is full of contrasting colours and has curly swirls of lines instead of fluffy feathers. The background isn't the usual blue, it is a 'grassy' river of water. Her 'white' feathers are a combination of pastel blue and pink, olive green, sky blue, dusty pink, bright orange, lime green and white. Phoebe's 'black' feathers contain electric blue, hot pink, copper, bronze, blue/black and light blue. Her funky bill is the most abstract area of this large bird - lots of purples, pink, yellow and gold with highlights of pastel yellow.

Did you know... The pelican in Finding Nemo is a lie?

Remember Nigel from the Disney Pixar movie Finding Nemo? Well, even though the movie is set in Sydney waters, Nigel is a brown pelican, a North American bird.

The Australian pelican is almost entirely white, with just a bit of colour on the end of their wings, while brown pelicans feature a brown, red and grey mixture of colours across their body.
