Painted as a homage to one of my favourites, Carel Fabritius (1622-1654)
Of all Rembrandt's pupils, Fabritius was the only one to develop his own artistic style. A typical Rembrandt portrait would have a plain dark background with the subject defined by spotlighting. In contrast, Fabritius' portraits feature delicately lit subjects against light-coloured, textured backgrounds.
(from Wikipedia)
Fabritius was tragically killed at the age of 32 when the Delft municipal gunpowder magazine exploded in 1654.
Framed in very old solid wood frame with some gold leaf. Overall dimension with frame is 61 x 50 cm. Painted on wood and with walnut oil as a medium, as used by Dutch Masters of 17th century.
