The Australian Magpie is an icon in our culture and much loved by the public. This bird is great fun to paint as the black and white body is a strong graphic image and the eyes show a high intelligence and quirky personality. I have paired his monochromatic feathers with a touch of vibrant royal blue in both the sheen of his head and also the suggested misty blue background over pen crosshatching. It is, in my mind, a chilly morning in country NSW as he surveys his local territory and warbles his distinctive call.
