This artwork marks a break in my usual style of realism. 'Interconnectedness' demonstrates the way everything in nature is part of a large ecosystem, even though many species of animals never have anything to do with each other. In fact, species of small birds spend their time trying to avoid others, while large ones are always on the lookout to find an animal to prey on.
The dragonflies have been painted out of proportion to the Rainbow Bee Eater - a predator of the Dragonfly - in an attempt to portray how large they may appear to such a small bird.
The Wedge-tailed Eagle has been painted in a surrealist manner, as one can only imagine how such a bird must appear to prey species, who never really get the chance to observe them like humans do. In situations where birds and other small animals have to escape pursuit in a panic, their memories might possibly piece together a predator with little visual accuracy, much like humans tend to do.
