My paintings are layered pieces, and are comprised of layers in acrylic and oil. I start with an underpainting in acrylic, using a cool red, and work to illustrate tonal values- much in the same way as a black and white photocopy. I have found that using this colour underneath, creates a glow which can be seen through the subsequent oil layers. It gives all of the blossom colours, and all of the foliage colours also, an intensity which would not be possible without the red underneath, and it also gives me the flexibility to leave the underpainting showing through where desired. To apply a thin wash of oil over the top of the intense red underpainting, gives me a lot of flexibility with effects and tonal values.
