This image is one of a series, I created while living in China. It is based on the coupling of distinct flora with specific fauna.
Mandarin ducks were called ‘birds of love’ in ancient China. They pair for life. They fly together, swim together and sleep with their necks crossed. If one partner dies, the other will remain single for life.
The pink lotus flower symbolizes spiritual path & enlightenment, while the white lotus flower symbolizes peace, purity, and calmness.
So, in Chinese mythology, when Mandarin ducks and Lotus are depicted together, it signifies that the owners of the image will have a marriage that embodies harmony, faithfulness and continuing affection between the couple.
The Chinese translation, comprising vertical calligraphy, reads from left to right; mandarin ducks, Lotus, harmonious and affectionate couple.
