This is an image from my ‘Shadow’ series that I created while living in China. It is a humourous look at a feral cat, basking in the shadow of a cart and dreaming of a cool dark refreshing jungle.
In Beijing, where I lived for 12 years, there are somewhere between 500,000 and 5 million feral cats, roaming through its courtyard houses, construction sites, and gated apartment complexes.
These brave cats attempt to survive the city’s bitter cold winters and extreme hot summers. Their lives are harsh, brutish, and short.
This particular cat was always there to greet me each morning on my way to work. I imagine she is long gone now, but her moment of peace is forever embedded in this image
