D for dog was the call sign for the Aircraft my father flew in the World War 2 ‘Martin Baltimore’
My father was an extremely qualified aviator... He survived the Second World War because he was fully instrument rated. Rated at that time by the British Air Ministry was the highest aviation qualification a pilot could have. This was the main reason he survived. Discharged at 23 his pilots log read like something out of a ‘Boy’s Own’ novel. An amazing narrative like so many young servicemen that fort for King and Country.
Dad did pay the price for his contribution and suffered from depression all of his life which related to war time experience. Hence how cryptic was D for dog... the black dog flew everywhere with dad after the second world war .. Like so many that survived.
