Travelling in Italy has provided me with overflowing inspiration. This painting, when I stood there looking out to the Duomo, was one of those moments that I knew would one day become one of my paintings. I find the colours uplifting and so reminiscent of that moment. The smooth canvas lends itself to a freedom of brushstrokes and smooth glazes. The contrast between the cool blue and the rusty and vermilion underpainting sings. I love the simplicity of the strokes and the deliberate lack of detail that tells a story without being overfussy.
