I set out to capture my eldest daughter Tahlya in what I felt like was a moment in time. I am watching her transform into a young lady, full of compassion and a love of life. I chose to portray her stepping forward from a black background, simply being her past, and into the next stage of her life- beaming. For me, the perfect final touch for the portrait was a butterfly, applied in a childlike manner, as if it were face paint. It represents her metamorphosis: A profound change in form from one stage to the next.
