Summer's Promise II features collage with my own hand painted papers. Bright and Bold Red and orange flowers and buds are surrounded by lots of strappy green leaves and other details, on a black background.
My process begins with an acrylic painting of the design, direct on the canvas. Then I select hand painted papers from my vast collection, or I make more patterned papers in the colours of the painting. I tear or cut pieces to fit over the painting, adhering them with archival acrylic medium until the design is completed. The next step is adding fine details with pens, pencils, crayons or more paint. The finished surface is textured, and very tactile, and has a satin varnish to seal and protect.
The collage continues around the sides, so can be hung straight on the wall, or propped on a shelf. Or frame it if you prefer, it's your choice, but is definitely not required.
