My art teachers in Florence might look askance at using photographic reference. But some subjects, and situations, demand it. For painting water, it’s the only option.
The way water constantly moves makes it difficult to capture. I find if you try and paint water in real life, the resulting semblance of surf and streams and ocean and pond tend to be rather generic. You just can't make up the unique curl of that breaker, the lace of that waterfall or that ripple under that exact light.
This picture is a case in point, but for a different reason. Sometimes you see great subjects when it's simply not possible to stop and paint. In this instance, I was steering a boat up a narrow channel in the Hawkesbury when I saw this great contrast between a flat side of the river and a sheer cliff directly opposite; horizontal versus vertical.
There were vessels behind me and alongside me and you simply can't plonk down in the middle of a channel, obstructing other craft. Still steering, I fired off a few frames one-handed.
Great when you can serve two masters at once, Neptune and Athena.
I am selling limited edition (1 of 100) giclee prints of this painting on 200gsm fine art paper. The dimensions are 61cm by 91.5cm (2 foot by 3 foot).
The original artwork (not available for sale) is oil on wood.
We ship these prints rolled in tubes. This makes shipping significantly cheaper (and less susceptible to damage) and allows you to choose a local specialist for framing.
We can also arrange for this to be printed on premium matte canvas or in different sizes. Please contact us if this is something you’d like us to arrange.
