In this painting the light and dark and vibrant colour create an otherworldly tranquility. It continues with my fascination in the sublime of micro-worlds, biology and sea-life. The circular organic motifs and the organic cluster patterns allude to cellular life forms, dainty aquatic-life and to the visceral otherworldliness of the building blocks of life like cells, amoeba and molecules. Sublime and beautiful yet also possessing a feeling of fragility and vulnerability.
”I feel like I am gently floating like jelly-fish” is a lovely comment I so often receive from this series.
The big. The tiny. The sea. The surf wash and foam. The lace. The molecules. These things I think about and look at when I create these paintings. They can be viewed as miniscule cell life just as easily as dawn light through a lace curtain or an underwater garden with floating coral blooms.
In this artwork I am looking at making connections between my microscopic cellular life-forms and man-made patterns. I utilized lace in the creation of surface of this work as it has this rich cellular feel as well as creating a powerful visual dynamic. The beautiful delicate designs in lace are created by a similar growth pattern to life itself. Both forms grow from one central point outwards, cell-by-cell, stitch by stich as do the paintings themselves, all growing organically from one starting point, each cell form popping out from the one before. I was thinking how beautiful this is, poetically and visually, but also how it is intrinsically connected to all forms of life.
What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls finesse and with a splash of colour for years to come.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jacquelyn Stephens is a Melbourne based artist who has been successfully exhibiting her paintings for over 20 years since completing a BFA in Painting at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. She has gained an extensive knowledge of Art, quality art materials, techniques and theory from working closely within in the arts industries and in her own art practice. Jacquelyn works full time from her studio on the Melbourne fringe. She has had several successful solo and group exhibitions in commercial galleries and artists run spaces. Her paintings can be seen in many media publications and are held in private collections worldwide. Many of the key themes in her work have been informed by her interest in water, nature, science and the domain of medicine.
The ultimate aim of my paintings is to create a kind of poetic peacefulness. A sense of harmony and joy on the walls they hang on and for those who view them.
