Artwork Description

Acrylic on wood, ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

This is an original one off, abstract painting on a round plywood panel ready to hang on your beautiful wall.

I was lucky to grow up by and, most of the time, in the sea. So much so, that I think I have brine for blood and salty bones. The echoes of the sea are never far. I now spend half my living time in the city, where I do miss being so close to the rugged southern coast. The ocean remains a constant source of joy, inspiration and healing for me. My message is always be kind to the ocean and to the delicate natural world around you.

This painting has a beautiful feeling of growth and blooming. Akin to the beginnings of life on a miniscule scale.

‘Bio-Sphere Rockpool Bloom’ belongs to my ‘Aqua Vitae’ Series, inspired by microscopic other worlds and aquatic wonderlands. Particularly cell growth, minuscule amoebas, plant life and of course, as I grew up by the sea, I can never escape the otherworldliness of underwater sea life such as coral, algae blooms, seaweed growth and all things rock-pool. The shapes I have used and their arrangement are intended to form visual intrigue moving in and out of focus and relating to our memories of these things in nature. There is an underlying texture and subtle tonal shifts in the background that give the piece a glow and deep space.

The circular shape allows you to come in close like looking through a round microscope lens or a submarine window. The colours reflect nature and are inspired by the mini-worlds discovered in rock pools and coral reefs with a particular reference to the rock-pools of Phillip Islands south coast where I now spend much of my time. In my dreams and memories the black basalt rock of this area create a sharp contrast to the barnacle growths, wildly coloured algae’s of the area and the crashing surf breaking into the pools as the tide rises.

Ultimately the paintings are about our sense of awe and wonder at this beautiful nature and connecting with all the building blocks of all life.

What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls a talking point and interest for years to come.
