Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.
Signed on the front.
This portrait is based on a bust of the very strange Roman Emperor Elagabalus. The presence of the rose petals is reference to a probably invented episode in the life of the Roman emperor, also known as Heliogabalus (204โ222), taken from the Augustan History, although the Latin refers to "violets and other flowers". The original reference is this:
'In a banqueting-room with a reversible ceiling he once buried his guests in violets and other flowers, so that some were actually smothered to death, being unable to crawl out to the top.'
Ready to hang with strong wire/d-rings on the back.
