The inspiration for Against the Wind came from a visit to Berkeley River in Western Australia. On a very wind swept and lonely beach there was a flock of Little Terns all clustered together facing into the wind. It made for a wonderful photo which I turned into this painting. I have abstracted the birds and the scene instilling movement and fragility, painting expressively to give the feeling of the transient nature of the moment. A sudden movement and the birds were gone, swirling into the strong wind.
